Lady Commodores End their Season on Top with a Win

February 25, 2017 - In the team's final home game of the season, where sophomore players were honored, the Lady Commodores of LCCC hosted Hocking College (4-24) . After controlling the first half, LCCC would end the game on top as they defeated the Lady Hawks 65-58. The team finishes the year 3-27 and falls just short of qualifying for the post season.

After losing to the Lady Hawks on September 21st by 22 points, the Lady Commodores needed to win and win by 23 to get the birth into the postseason. Bonner in her last home game wasn't going out without a fight.

To start things off, Bonner hit 8 of her team's first 9 points to help her team take an early 9-3 lead. The lead didn't last long as the Lady Hawks stormed back to take a 13-9 lead. Much of that was due to the 4 early turnovers by LCCC.

As the lead started to grow for Hocking, Rachel Downing would drain 3 of her 9 first half points which sparked the Lady Commodores. With the timing running out, Sarah Kyser would hit a last second shot to tie things up at 16.

In the 2nd quarter, the game would go back and forth as neither team could find a way to get separation. As a team, LCCC would shoot 44% from the floor, 43% from three while out-rebounding the Hawks 14 to 8.

As the quarter came near an end, LCCC would go on a 10 to 3 run to end the half leading 33-28. Heather Smyth and Rachel Downing would find their stroke as they each scored 6 points and Downing brought 6 rebounds down.

In the 2nd half it was the spark at the 5:44 mark in the 3rd that gave the Lady Commodores the momentum needed. During a 6-0 run, the Commodores would grab an 8 point lead with Bonner, Smyth and Shaw all contributing; Bonner would lead the group with 5 third quarter points.

With another late storm by Hocking, LCCC would get a Bonner last second layup to lead 44-42 heading to the last quarter.

Much was the same in the 4th quarter as neither team could gain much separation. Leading the way again for their team was Bonner, who added 6 points and 5 rebounds, while Downing chipped in 6 points of her own.

With a one point lead with 2:40 remaining, the Commodores would go on a 12-5 run to close things out. All 6 of Bonner's 4th quarter points came in the final 2 minutes which helped seal the victory for LCCC. The Commodores would go on to win 65-58.

For the game, LCCC shot 41% from the floor while holding Hocking to 32% and out-rebounded the Lady Hawks 44-35.

"We've loss so many games this year by team's hitting timely 3's and this was the first game we did it. It was a great way to finish the season. This was our best ball the past 3 weeks which is a great way to go into the offseason. Five or six players are due to be back next year so I'm very excited for next season" said Coach Granito following the game.
