The 2022-23 LCCC Commodores

Commodores Can't Secure Season Sweet of Hocking College, Fall 101-86

February 11, 2023 - - Lorain County Community College men's basketball couldn't complete the season sweep of the Hocking Hawks Saturday afternoon, losing 101-86, despite getting excellent performances from a number of LCCC players who scored in double figures on Sophomore Day.

The Commodores escaped Hocking College last month with a late win against the Hawks in Nelsonville, Ohio, 92-90.  However, this time around the Commodores had their backs against the wall with Trevell Adams (23 points, four rebounds, and four assists) and the rest of the Hawks as they took a 13-point lead into the half.

Hockings lead would balloon to 20 with 16 minutes in the game, 64-44, before the Commodores tried to mount a comeback.

Over the next seven minutes, LCCC would go on a 26-12 run to cut the Hawk's lead down to six with just under 10 minutes to play.  During LCCC's comeback effort, they got scoring from everywhere.  Jayden Roberts (Wellington, Ohio/Wellington HS) scored 12 of his 22 points during the run and was accompanied by his teammates Lem Payne (Philadelphia, Ohio/Mount Pleasant HS), Casey Kelley (Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS), Anthony Mcghaw (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville HS).

After that, the tank was empty and the Hawks got the lead back up to double-digits for the rest of the game.

Mcghaw would finish with 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting.  Payne had 15 points and had six rebounds, six assists, and four steals.  The four steals added to Payne's LCCC single-season record for steals, which is now at 66 with at least three games left to play in his basketball career for the Commodores.  Along with his scoring, Roberts had nine rebounds and had four blocks.

Brandon Fisher (Strongsville, Ohio/Columbia HS) scored 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting and Bennett Sulen (Avon, Ohio/St. Edward HS) scored 12 and also tied Roberts for the team lead in rebounds with nine.

LCCC honored seven sophomores who will be receiving their degrees in the spring: Mcghaw, Quante May (Cleveland, Ohio/Horizon Science Academy), Luqman Lateef (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw HS), Sulen, Payne, Kelley, and Jason Becka (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick HS).

The Commodores play their final two regular season contests on the road against Owens Community College and Clark State Community College next week. After that LCCC will play in the Region XII DIII Championship held at the Ewing Activities Center Gymnasium on February 22.
