Commodore Men Land Big Home Win vs Hawks
January 26, 2019 - - The LCCC Commodores Men's basketball team landed a big win at home Saturday night to the Hawks of Hocking College with a final of 89-74.
Both teams started the game slow but found their rhythm towards the end of the first half. Three players finished the first half with 6 points each for the Hawks, including Carter Hedden who shot 2-3 on 3-point field goals. Lorain was trailing for most of the first half but had the lead at the end of 20 minutes with a score of 30-26. Justin Newman (Cincinnati/Robert A Taft) lead the Commodores at halftime with 9 points. Fellow starter Thomas Hronis (North Ridgeville) had a big impact on the defensive side of the ball, leading the team with 6 defensive rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 blocks.
It was a tale of two halves, as both teams shot the ball significantly better in the second half on field goals, 3- pointers, and free throws. Hocking improved their field goal percentage from 28.1% to 35.1% in the second half, while Lorain's shooting improved from 44% to 57.1%. Jovon Jones (Elyria/F.B.C.S.) lead the Commodores to a home win with the only double-double of the game; 22 total points and 10 rebounds along with several dunks. Four other Commodores finished with double digit point totals, including Newman.
Reflecting on the game, Head Coach Marty Eggleston had this to say, "We needed a win. A win at home makes it special. We lost our rhythm and it came back to us." Eggleston commented on Hocking's lack of a designated Center and how it impacted the game plan, "We knew it would be hard for them to matchup inside. Coach Brandon [Lawler] had a big influence on the game." Coach Eggleston also pointed out the impact of David Sedeno Martel (Malaga, Spain/IES Vega de Mijas) late in the game. Sedeno Martel was perfect in the game; shooting 5-5 on field goals and 2-2 on free throws in only 6 minutes of play.
LCCC improves to 11-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play while Hocking falls to 7-12 overall and 3-6 in conference.
The Commodores take on Bryant & Stratton College at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 30 at home.
